Acrylic and Gouache on Paper
In this self portrait, I reclaim the misogynistic power that Pablo Picasso encompassed in his creative process. Growing up, I always admired his colorful artworks and his abstracted forms. However, as I matured I began to question his focus on young women and portraits that are obviously viewed through the male gaze. As I researched my concern, I came across his sketches of Minotaurs. The male figure shown through a powerful beast aggressively standing over, or holding a delicate female form.
In this piece I refute his misogynistic view and obsession with girls. I began by using the harsh medium of acrylic paint to recreate his cubist portrait, and gradually transitioned to the colorful, bold, medium of gouache to create my self portrait. I painted myself in a position that signifies power to contrast Picasso’s misogyny.
